Burning Stars: Back in November you released your debut EP as a solo artist called
Higher Hotels. Can you tell me about it? What influenced the sound and the lyrics?
Dustin Hook: Higher Hotels EP is 15 minutes of a lot of emotions, highs/lows, & energy.. I
always liked the idea of a brighter melodic sound w/ darker lyrics and wanted to express that
in my own way. Most of us live with the angel & devil on our shoulder and music is the perfect
way to bring that out all at once.
BS: The first song you chose to release off the EP was "A New Low". How did you go
about choosing this song? Do you have any plans to make a video?
Dustin: "A New Low" was recommended by a lot of close friends.. I think it's the most "tasteful"
song to the general listener although the lyrics come from a very dark place.. I have a video
treatment for "Lost in Mandalay" and hope to shoot that this year sometime. It involves hotels,
casinos, & alcohol. ...Basically a rap video :)
BS: Besides the 4 songs on the EP, have you written and recorded anything else?
Will we see a full length in the future?
Dustin: I've written a few dozen songs over the last 3 years and definitely plan on recording
and releasing music sooner than later.
BS: Do you have any plans in the works to play shows?
Dustin: No tour set in stone yet for a solo tour.. I may be playing bass again which is
something I'd ultimately love to do.
BS: What would your dream tour be?
Dustin: I'd just like to rock the best arenas in the states.. The more fans, the better.
BS: You have been playing music for at least 10 years. What has been the most
memorable experience(s) you've had thus far?
Dustin: Probably Soundwave Festival in Australia 2008.. Everything about was just
high-energy, foreign, & perfect. Performing in front of thousands of fans creates a feeling
inside that is hard to be duplicated. Not to mention I fell on stage in Melbourne which led to 6
stitches in my forehead but I still finished the set, just a little more red than when we started
playing. Gotta love rock.
BS: If you had one super power, what would it be? And would you use it for good or
Dustin: The ability to never be hungover after a long night.. Just imagine that.
BS: In 2009, My American Heart disbanded, what else have you been up to besides
Dustin: I got into the Real Estate business in 2008 which started as something just to "stay
busy" but I've been blessed to now run a very solid business that services hundreds of buyers
& sellers locally each year. It's a 24/7 type of experience which I love but I'm thankful to now
be able to spread some of my focus back on the true passion, music.
BS: Is there anything else you would like to add? Or any final words you'd like to
say to your fans?
Dustin: Thanks to everyone, new friends & old friends.. It's amazing to see such great
fans/friends supporting my music. I just realized it's been about 10 years since I left home in a
van & trailer hoping to catch a break for the 1st time. Life is wild. It would never be this good
without support & love from fans & friends.
