Name: Maureen Benedict
Location: Los Angeles, CA by way of Rochester, NY
Tell everyone a little bit about yourself! I was born and raised in
Rochester, New York with a love and passion for photography and
music. I started the site in 2001 and traveled all up and down the east
coast and up into Canada shooting and interviewing bands before
moving to Los Angeles, California in 2009. I became very interested in
rock and punk at a very young age. Bands I grew up listening to were
Placebo, Silverchair, The Cranberries, No Doubt and Garbage to name a
few before discovering bands like Rancid, MxPx and NoFX after my
cousins would make me mix tapes of bands they loved.
How long have you been with BurningStars.net: I started the site
on June 22, 2001 after seeing Good Charlotte & MxPx perform at
Runwayz in Buffalo, NY.
What do you do for BurningStars.net: I do all the businessy type
stuff as well as shoot and interview bands and write reviews.
What got you into Photography? I needed some extra credits at
school and they offered beginner and advanced photography classes. My
mom let me borrow her Canon AE1 and developed a love for
photography. In the classes we learned how to develop black & white film
and prints. Not long after this I began shooting bands and this has now
become my passion.
What do you like doing the most; photographing bands,
interviewing bands or writing about the shows? Definitely shooting.
What type of camera do you use? Canon 7D and Canon Rebel T3i
What Program do you use to edit your photos? PhotoStudio 5 and
What is your most favourite concert experience? There's been a few
over the years.
1. In 2000 I won tickets to see Kittie and have lunch with them. I got to
skip school that day and have lunch at Jack Astors with a friend and a
few other contest winners. My parents hung out with their parents while
we ate. Later that night I got to stand side stage with my two friends
during Kittie's set and hung out backstage with them.
2. I took my mom to the New York State Fair in 2006 to see Joan Jett &
The Blackhearts while she was battling cancer. We both got to meet
drummer Thommy Price, who gave us his solo album and got to stand
side stage during the band's performance.
3. April 2007 I flew out to New York City to see Placebo perform at the
Roseland Ballroom during the Meds tour. About a week prior to this I
had spoken to now ex-drummer Steve Hewitt on the phone. Placebo put
on one of the best live shows I'd ever seen. Later after the show I hung
out back with Steve, bassist Stefan and other fans. Frontman Brian
came out, smiled and thanked us all for coming to the show before
heading to the hotel. He wasn't feeling well but still gave 110% during
their set. 7 years later I got to shoot them at Club Nokia in Los Angeles.
4. Later that year I was offered the chance to interview drummer Ben
Gillies via phone and go out to Cleveland to shoot his band Silverchair. I
had never seen them live before and had grown up listening to them so I
jumped at the chance to do this. I took an 8 hour bus ride out to
Cleveland alone and it ended up being a great experience. I met Ben and
bassist Chris Joannou after the show and they were very down to earth.
Favourite Bands: Ah there are so many but here are a few of my
favourites. Placebo, Silverchair, Simple Plan, The Ataris, Killing Heidi,
Scott & Rivers, One Ok Rock, Letter Kills, AFI, The Rocket Summer, Alice
Cooper, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Ramones, No
Doubt, Garbage, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, The Runaways, etc. I also
love all the bands that were signed to Drive-Thru Records.
